The Wizard of Oz: Youth Edition – A Heartfelt Trip Down the Yellow Brick Road

Performed July 18–19, 2025 | Directed by Janelle Laux

In a whirlwind of color, music, and charm, The Wizard of Oz: Youth Edition brought timeless magic to the Florida Rep stage. This shorter version of the classic musical didn’t cut corners—it embraced its limitations and turned them into strengths, delivering a fast-paced, emotionally rich hour of theatre that kept the audience engaged from start to finish.

At the center of it all was Georgina Pipitone as Dorothy, whose steady presence anchored the show. Her rendition of “Over the Rainbow” was a highlight—sweet and sincere, with just the right amount of longing. She brought a natural confidence to the role and handled each scene with heart.

The trio of Carter Montalvo (Scarecrow), Lillith Dubé (Tin Man), and Christine Wise (Lion) offered comedy, pathos, and charm in equal measure. Their chemistry was delightful, and each brought something unique to the group’s dynamic. Emily Desmond was deliciously wicked as the Witch, and McKenna Davis floated across the stage with grace as Glinda.

Director Janelle Laux used every inch of the stage to create the fantastical world of Oz. With whimsical costumes from Skylee Vaughn, creative scenic and sound elements, and energetic ensemble work, the show felt full and alive. The ensemble, filled with munchkins, winkies, jitterbugs, and monkeys, brought infectious energy to the stage, making the world feel big and bustling even in a youth edition format.

Behind the curtain, the creative team brought their A-game. Jessica Mongerio’s music direction helped lift the iconic score, and Katelynn Handa’s choreography gave every scene movement and momentum. The tech and design work by Andy Harrington, Braden Downing, and Jordan Moore completed the picture.

This was more than just a fun kids’ show—it was a loving tribute to the power of courage, kindness, and coming home. It reminded us all that no matter how far we travel, there’s truly no place like home.
