Florida Rep Education to present Disney’s NEWSIES JR. at 2023 Junior Theatre Festival

Fresh off its 2022 win for BEST PRODUCTION at the Junior Theatre Festival in Atlanta, Florida Rep Education is pleased to announce its 2023 Junior Theatre Festival offering. Directed by its new Education Director, Monique Caldwell, and choregraphed by Megan Jimenez Leonard, Florida Rep’s Education Department will defend its BEST PRODUCTION title with Disney’s “NEWSIES JR.” at the 2023 Festival January 13 – 15 in Atlanta.

There is no fee to audition, however, there are tuition fees and travel expenses associated with participation with Florida Rep’s Junior Theatre Festival team.

“NEWSIES JR.” is crafted for young performers from the 2012 Broadway musical, which was based on the 1992 film. Inspired by the rousing true story of newsboys in turn-of-the-century New York City, “NEWSIES JR.” features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein.

When powerful newspaper publishers raise prices at the newsboys’ expense, the charismatic Jack Kelly rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions. Together, the newsies learn that they are stronger together, and they create a movement to fight for what's right.

Including the now-classic songs “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “Santa Fe,” “NEWSIES JR.” is a timeless story full of spirit and heart.

Florida Rep’s Education Department produced NEWSIES as part of its Conservatory season in 2019, and is excited to revisit the popular title with its Conservatory, Camp, and Junior Theatre Festival students in 2023.
