Florida Rep Education’s production of Shrek Jr. is a joyful celebration of talent, teamwork, and theatrical magic. Under the skilled direction of Monique Caldwell, t
his family-favorite musical bursts to life with colorful sets, playful costumes, and a cast of young performers who light up the stage with charisma and confidence.
From the moment the curtain rises on the opening number, Big Bright Beautiful World, the production makes it clear that this isn’t just a student show—it’s a polished, professional-level performance. Scenic Designer Charles Clark’s imaginative sets transport audiences straight into Shrek’s swamp and beyond, while MK Doherty’s lighting design adds a dynamic, storyb
ook glow to every scene. The costumes by Amanda Miller are equally impressive, capturing the whimsy of beloved fairy-tale characters with vibrant detail and personality.
The talented cast of young performers brings incredible energy and heart to the stage. Dylan Perez shines as Shrek, balancing humor and warmth, while Sophia Guth and Zoey Levangie impressively share the role of Princess Fiona. The double-casting is especially smart: one Fiona remains in her ogre transformation while the other plays the princess, meaning both actors get to perform onstage every show. This clever choice adds depth and fun to Fiona’s character and gives audiences twice the talent.
Bruno Chagas delivers scene-stealing laughs as Donkey, and Viktor Sweeney’s Lord Farquaad is delightfully over-the-top. Every ensemble member—from th
e fairy-tale creatures belting Freak Flag to the dancing rats and Duloc citizens—contributes to a lively and engaging world that keeps audiences smiling.
Musical Director Roz Metcalf deserves applause for shaping the cast’s strong harmonies and spirited performances, while Choreographer Megan Leonard’s fun and inventive dance numbers bring extra sparkle to the show. Stage Manager Sarah Colatriano and Assistant Stage
Manager Rebekah Williams keep the production running seamlessly, supported by the excellent work of Student Tech Ops A’mer Ashley and Sophie Halstead, plus Sound Designer Braden Downing, who ensures every lyric and punchline is crystal clear.
With catchy songs like I Know It’s Today and I Think I Got You Beat performed with enthusiasm and heart, this production is a treat for audiences of all ages. The kids not only sound fantastic but look incredible, fully embodying their characters and proving just how much talent Florida Rep Education is nurturing.
This Shrek Jr. is more than a fun night at the theater—it’s a testament to the hard work and creativity of every student and artist involved. With only three more performances left, now is the time to grab your tickets and see this “big, bright, beautiful” show in action!
