Show Review: Peter Pan Jr. at Florida Repertory Theatre

Created with Sketch.

Florida Rep education’s Peter Pan Jr. soared with imagination and heart in a vibrant summer camp production that left audiences beaming with joy. The Friday performance kicked off with a sweet surprise—an opening number by the Mini Stars performing “I Won’t Grow Up.” Their infectious energy, dance moves, and undeniable cuteness set the perfect tone for the evening. (Finnie Thatch, Ollie Nibson, Toby Bramble, Jasper Quickley, Rory Tinkwell, Luna Featherstone, Mira Skybloom, Kaia Redwill, Suki Rainhart, Indi Moonfern, Silas Grimtide, Bonnie Slade, Thorn Blackwater, Maisie Flinthook, Gideon Cragbarrel—we see you!)

From the very first scene with Wendy (Giovanna Muro) and John (Embry Croop) play-acting as their parents, the theme of growing up—and the refusal to—came into sharp, touching focus. The clever use of lighting to represent Tinker Bell, sound effects for Nana the dog, and immersive staging choices reminded us all why live theatre is such a magical and necessary experience.

Kavi Roff’s Peter Pan was charming and confident, with a voice that carried beautifully across Neverland. But the standout crowd favorite was undoubtedly Bruno Chagas as Captain Hook. Commanding the stage with comedic flair and full character commitment, Bruno’s performance was both hilarious and memorable.

Another major highlight? The Brave Girls! Led by Lilly Downing as Tiger Lily, this fierce and fabulous ensemble delivered stunning choreography, especially impressive given the show’s short rehearsal time. Each performer brought individuality and boldness to their role, and the dance sequences were nothing short of electric.

The entire cast—from the spirited Lost Boys to the playful Pirates and enchanting Pixie Dust Ensemble—poured heart and talent into their performances. Every scene was filled with color, creativity, and collaboration.

While the young cast of Peter Pan Jr. soared across the stage with heart and humor, it was the work of the production team—and the visionary direction of Megan Jimenez Leonard—that made this summer camp production truly magical.

Directed by Megan Jimenez Leonard, the show was smart, cohesive, and full of heart. Megan brought out the best in every student—from first-time performers to seasoned campers—ensuring each actor had a moment to shine and a role that mattered. Her staging choices balanced clarity with creativity, and she kept the pacing sharp without ever rushing the heart of the story. Under her guidance, the production didn’t feel like “just a camp show”—it felt like real, vibrant theatre with something to say. Her love for the students and for storytelling radiated through every scene.

Scenic Designer Jordan Moore transformed the stage into a playground for imagination. From the cozy Darling nursery to the sprawling wilds of Neverland, each set piece was functional, playful, and beautifully integrated into the story. Every choice allowed the young actors to explore the space fully and brought the world to life with charm and versatility.

Lighting Designer Jonanne Jean-Marie added mood, magic, and motion to every moment. Whether it was the soft glow of Tinker Bell, the eerie flash of the crocodile, or the sparkling flight to Neverland, Jonanne’s lighting design made fantasy feel tangible and guided the audience through emotional shifts with grace and clarity.

Sound Designer Braden Downing brought precision and playfulness to the soundscape. From realistic dog barks and ticking clocks to immersive ambient effects, the sound design elevated the world and gave character to even the nonverbal moments. Her work added depth and momentum to every scene.

Music Director Jessica Mongerio coaxed confident and joyful performances from the cast, creating vocal moments that resonated. The ensemble numbers were bright and tuneful, and the solos were heartfelt. Jessica’s work helped the performers connect musically to the story—and to each other.

Choreographer Katelynn Handa delivered high-energy, expressive choreography that made every group shine. The Brave Girls brought the house down with their powerful routines, and the pirate hijinks had perfect comedic timing. Katelynn’s movement work made the stage feel dynamic and alive, helping students tell the story through their whole bodies.

Stage Manager Joy Brooks kept the show running seamlessly, a Herculean task with a cast this size. Every transition, cue, and backstage moment happened with calm professionalism and care. Joy’s coordination ensured the performers could stay focused on having fun and staying safe—two essential ingredients for a successful camp show.

And behind it all, DJ Kelly, Summer Program Manager, continued to make Florida Rep’s education program feel like home for so many young artists. His care, support, and commitment to giving students meaningful creative opportunities were evident in every smiling face and standing ovation.

Together, this extraordinary team created a production that was not only fun and entertaining—but deeply impactful for everyone involved. Peter Pan Jr. reminded us that theatre can be silly and profound, loud and tender, glittery and grounded—all at once. It’s clear that these students weren’t just learning lines and choreography—they were learning confidence, collaboration, and joy.

Bravo to the entire team, onstage and off. You’ve given your young cast and your audience something truly unforgettable.

Peter Pan Jr. was not just a children’s musical—it was a shining example of how theatre can build confidence, spark joy, and remind us all to hold on to a little bit of childhood wonder.

Bravo to the cast, crew, and creative team! Neverland has never looked brighter.
