The “greatest fairy tale never told” springs to life in “Shrek the Musical Jr.,” the award-winning Broadway favorite adapted from the Oscar-winning film.

Performed by the talented students of Florida Rep’s Theatre Conservatory, this production is brimming with energy, heart and plenty of laughs, proving that young performers can deliver big-time entertainment.

At the heart of the show is Dylan Perez as the reclusive ogre Shrek, who commands the stage with a grounded and heartfelt performance. His journey is made all the more delightful thanks to Bruno Chagas’ wisecracking Donkey, whose comic timing kept the audience in stitches. Matching them in both spirit and song, Sophia Guth brings warmth and spark to Princess Fiona. Her strong voice and clever portrayal of a princess with rough edges made her one of the evening’s highlights.

No fairy tale would be complete without a villain, and Viktor Sweeney’s pint-sized but short-tempered Lord Farquaad stole nearly every scene he appeared in. His over-the-top antics earned consistent laughter, making him a crowd favorite. Adding even more personality to the ensemble, Sarah Salerno charmed as Gingy, the cookie with sass to spare. Already a seasoned performer, Salerno’s stage presence was instantly recognizable to audiences familiar with her previous work at Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre.

The production truly shines thanks to its large cast of fairy tale misfits, who bring color, chaos, and plenty of fun to the story. Rounding out the cast was a delightful performance by 9-year-old Georgia Durant as Little Ogre, an adorable reminder that talent comes in all sizes.

I’d just remind the cast not to break the fourth wall and look out to see family and friends in the audience. Stay focused on your performance and continue to pour your heart and soul into it.

With catchy songs, outrageous humor, and vibrant staging, “Shrek the Musical Jr.” is ogre-sized fun for the whole family. Florida Rep’s Theatre Conservatory proves yet again that its young performers are worth watching, delivering a show that is as entertaining as it is heartwarming. Hats off to Director Monique Caldwell on a fun show filled with great costumes designed by Amanda Miller and set designs.
