Ten days until the razors are sharp, the pies are baking, and the streets of London run red at the Historic Arcade Theatre.

Florida Rep Education’s Conservatory production of Sweeney Todd: School Edition opens May 22, bringing Stephen Sondheim’s legendary musical thriller to the stage with a powerhouse cast of young performers, an ambitious creative team, and one of the most challenging scores in musical theatre history.

Directed by Monique Caldwell, this production dives headfirst into the dark, haunting world of vengeance, obsession, and survival. Set in 19th-century London, Sweeney Todd follows an unjustly exiled barber who returns home seeking revenge against the corrupt judge who destroyed his life. Alongside the delightfully twisted Mrs. Lovett, Todd’s quest for justice quickly spirals into something far more sinister.

For many audiences, Sweeney Todd is known for its thrilling story and razor-sharp humor — but behind the blood and meat pies lies one of Stephen Sondheim’s most musically demanding works ever written. From the chilling “Ballad of Sweeney Todd” to fan favorites like “The Worst Pies in London,” “Johanna,” and “A Little Priest,” the show pushes both performers and musicians to their limits.

Leading the cast is Gabriel Cruz in the title role, alongside Delilah Mendez as the eccentric pie shop owner Mrs. Lovett. The production also features Jackson Halliburton, Taylor Spurr, Lillith Dubé, Gustavo Mendez, and a large ensemble of student performers from across Southwest Florida.

“This is one of the most ambitious productions we’ve ever tackled in the Conservatory,” said Caldwell. “These students are handling incredibly difficult material with professionalism, passion, and tremendous artistry. Audiences are going to be blown away by what they’ve created.”

The production is brought to life by an exceptional creative and technical team, including Music Director Alexander LaPlante, Choreographer Megan Leonard, Costume Designer Kaylei Kipper, Lighting Designer MK Doherty, Sound Designer Kat Daniels, Fight/Intimacy Coordinator Hannah Easton, and Set Designer Charles Clark. A seasoned designer with more than 20 years of industry experience, Clark is known for his innovative approach and sharp attention to detail across theatrical productions, concerts, architectural lighting, and special events. Since joining Florida Rep during its 25th season, he has helped transform the theatre’s spaces into immersive worlds that elevate every production, bringing both technical expertise and bold creativity to Sweeney Todd.

What makes this production especially exciting is the scale. From sweeping ensemble numbers to intense dramatic scenes, Sweeney Todd demands an extraordinary level of focus from everyone involved — onstage and backstage alike. Florida Rep’s student tech team and crew have spent weeks helping transform the Historic Arcade Theatre into the dark and dangerous streets of Victorian London.

Whether you’re a longtime Sondheim fan or experiencing this legendary musical for the first time, this production promises an unforgettable theatrical event filled with stunning vocals, chilling storytelling, and a cast of rising young artists giving everything they have to the stage.
